Currently, the flying reptiles are referred to as pterosaurs. Pterosaurs come in a wide variety. Some have teeth, some have no teeth. Some have crests on their heads, some do not. Some have long tails, some do not. Some have webbing between their legs, some do not. Some have hair called pycnofibers and some do not. All pterosaurs have fragile, hollow bones, an especially long fourth finger that helps to create their wings and complex wings made of skin, muscle, blood vessels and air sac extensions. They range in size from as small as a robin to as large as a fighter jet. From their fossil footprints, we are able to deduce that they could walk not only on their feet, but also with the hands that make up their wings. The original fossils were thought to belong to animals that lived in the water as they were found in marine deposits. They may not have lived in the water, but they were for sure buried in water sediments. It is said that movies do not accurately depict these unusual flying creatures. Some folklore researchers connect specific pterosaurs to legends like the Thunder Bird.
All the replicas depicted here are of toothed pterosaurs. |
